The Kyrgyz Republic develops local cooperation to preserve ecosystems


KYRGYZ REPUBLIC – During the last meeting of the members of the Ramsar Regional Initiative for Central Asia, the environmental action and the festival "Save the Son-Kul Lake / Birds of the Son-Kul Lake", had been held on August 11-12, 2022 on the territory of the Son-Kul Lake in Naryn region, were presented as an example of local cooperation.

The environmental action was organized by the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Protected Areas of the Kyrgyz Republic together with the Karatal-Zhapyryk State Nature Reserve and partners within the framework of the project "Conservation of Wetlands ecosystems of Son-Kul Lake" with the support of CAG/Civic Forum. The participants of the action cleared the Son-Kul section of the Karatal-Zhapyryk State Nature Reserve from garbage.

The purpose of the festival "Save the Son-Kul Lake / Birds of the Son-Kul Lake" was to involve the local community and youth of the Cholpon Ayyl aimag of the Kochkor district in preserving the Son-Kul ecosystem and increasing the ecological responsibility of residents for the environment. The participants were activists and students of schools from nine villages of the Cholpon area of the Kochkor district, representatives of local self-government and the society of pasture users of the Cholpon area, the district and regional administration of the Naryn region, tour operators, mass media, members of the network of biocultural diversity “Nasyat”. The festival is dedicated to the year of "Protection of Mountain Ecosystems and climatic stability of the Kyrgyz Republic" within the framework of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.
