EC IFAS and CAREC: New Prospects for Regional Cooperation

Publication date: 03 May 2024

Today, on May 3, a meeting of the heads of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) and the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (EC IFAS) was held in Astana.

The parties discussed all aspects of cooperation on climate resilience in the region.

In his welcoming speech, CAREC Executive Director Zafar Makhmudov congratulated Mr. Askhat Orozbay on his appointment to the post of Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (EC IFAS), as well as on the opening of a new office in Astana.

Zafar Makhmudov stressed that EC IFAS and CAREC are the only organizations that unite the entire Central Asian region in solving the problems caused by climate change at the regional, national, and international levels, including government agencies, civil society, academia, the expert community and youth.

The effectiveness of cooperation between EC IFAS and CAREC is ensured by the harmonization of their partnership. While the mission of EC IFAS is the strategic orientation of the region's activities to achieve environmental well-being, the role of CAREC is to support all Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan) in the implementation of the developed strategies in practice. A successful example of cooperation between EC IFAS and CAREC is the project “Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Aral Sea Basin” (CAMP4ASB) during 2016-2024. The CAMP4ASB project is being implemented by CAREC jointly with EC IFAS with financial support from the World Bank and the Green Climate Fund. Its results and successes will be presented at the Central Asian Conference on Climate Change (CACCC-2024) on 27-28 May 2024 in Almaty, the opening ceremony of which will be attended by the Chairman of EC IFAS Askhat Orozbay. In addition, an agreement was reached on the signing of joint memorandums of cooperation between CAREC and EC IFAS during CACCC-2024.
