COP26. КС-26. Climate Change in Highlands


Glasgow, UK, 10 November 2021 – Central Asia Pavilion “5 countries-1 region-1 voice” hosted the side-event “Climate Change in Highlands” organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic.

In his welcome speech, Beksultan Ibraimov, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic, expressed gratitude to the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia for organization of Central Asia Pavilion, such great platform for events at the field of COP26.

The host of the event highlighted importance of a snow leopard for ecosystems conservation and presented actions taken for snow leopard preservation on territory of Central Asia.

The Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic called on the international community for cooperation and preservation of snow leopards.

The participants urged to recognize the importance of nature to mitigate and adapt climate change and to achieve goals of the Paris Agreement. It is necessary to recognize interactions between biodiversity and climate change.

Climate change data for Central Asia was also presented. For 45 years, temperature raises faster in lowland countries. In Kazakhstan, temperature increased by 2.9 C°, in Uzbekistan by 2.5 C°, in Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan by 2.1 C° and in Tajikistan by 1.4 C°.

The participants discussed the influence of climate change on highlands ecosystems.

Central Asia Pavilion is organized by CAREC in cooperation with EC IFAS and IGTIPC under financial support of the World Bank, OSCE, ERG, FAO and UNDP.
