Urumqi, 23 September 2026 — A delegation from the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) visited Xinjiang University and held a working meeting with Professor Zhonglin Xu.
The CAREC delegation was represented by Executive Director Batyr Mamedov and Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Programme Manager Azamat Kauazov.
Professor Zhonglin Xu is a professor, doctoral supervisor and member of the Department of Ecology at the Institute of Ecology and Environment of Xinjiang University. He also serves on the board of the Xinjiang Natural Resources Society and the Xinjiang Geographical Society.
During the talks, the parties discussed prospects for strengthening scientific and educational cooperation and implementing joint research initiatives. The main topics were ecology, climate change adaptation, water resources management, land restoration and biodiversity conservation. Special attention was paid to sustainable development of the region and the practical application of scientific developments.
CAREC representatives spoke about the organization’s priority areas of activity, projects implemented in Central Asian countries and mechanisms of regional dialogue. Professor Xu, in turn, presented the research areas of the Institute of Ecology and Environment and opportunities for joint work with Chinese scientists.
The parties agreed to prepare joint publications and grant applications, as well as to involve young scientists and doctoral students in joint projects. In addition, the possibility of organizing internships was discussed.
Meeting participants noted that continued dialogue between CAREC and Xinjiang University creates a basis for long-term partnership and the development of practical solutions in environmental protection and sustainable development.
Following the meeting, the parties agreed to maintain working contacts and work out concrete steps to implement the planned initiatives.
