Publication date: 18 September 2025

The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) has launched the implementation of the regional component of the Uzbekistan Resilient Landscapes Restoration Project (RESILAND UZ).

The project’s regional component promotes transboundary cooperation between Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries on a wide range of issues related to sustainable landscape restoration, including sustainable land management and climate change adaptation.

Key activities include the establishment of a regional knowledge-sharing platform and an online database, the harmonization of policies in the fields of land restoration and natural resource management, as well as the promotion of joint regional actions to address common environmental challenges.

“The initiative will help strengthen Uzbekistan’s cooperation with other countries in the region, enhance capacity building, and promote knowledge sharing on landscape restoration among government institutions and stakeholders across all five Central Asian nations,” said Azamat Kauazov, Deputy Project Team Leader.

The three-year project Uzbekistan Resilient Landscapes Restoration Project is being implemented by the Agency for Afforestation, expansion of green areas, and combating desertification under the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, with financial support from the World Bank, PROGREEN, and KWPF.

CAREC is implementing the regional component of the project with a budget of USD 2 million.

The Uzbekistan Resilient Landscapes Restoration Project is part of the World Bank’s RESILAND CA+ program, aimed at strengthening the resilience of regional landscapes across Central Asian countries. The project is also being implemented in Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, with similar national and regional objectives.

As highlighted, strengthening regional cooperation will contribute to effective management of shared resources, achieving economies of scale related to regional eco-tourism, and promoting collective actions to address the consequences of climate change and advance other common goals.
