Restoring Sustainable Landscapes. A Contract Signed between CAREC and the Forestry Agency under the Ministry of Ecology of the Republic of Uzbekistan

Within the framework of the project "RESILAND CA+: Uzbekistan Resilient Landscape Restoration", the Forestry Agency under the Ministry of Ecology, environmental protection and climate change of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) signed a three-year contract to strengthen regional cooperation.

 

The RESILAND Uzbekistan project is part of a broader regional program "RESILAND CA+", which covers the countries of the Central Asian region. Its main goal is to increase the sustainability of landscapes in transboundary areas of Central Asia through the restoration of natural ecosystems, the involvement of local communities, and strengthening institutional capacity.

The project objectives in Uzbekistan:

-      Increase the area of land under sustainable management;

-      Strengthen cooperation between Uzbekistan and other countries in the region on landscape restoration;

-      Create digital and institutional tools for more effective management of natural resources.

CAREC will provide comprehensive support to strengthen regional cooperation during the project, which includes:

-      Development and support of a regional online platform on sustainable landscape management and restoration, with integration into the Central Asia Climate Information Platform (CACIP). The platform will accumulate and disseminate knowledge, data, and best practices between the countries of the region.

-      Organization and coordination of regional events, including meetings of the RESILAND CA+ Regional Advisory Committee, round tables, dialogue platforms, and technical workshops. These events will be aimed at developing coordinated approaches to landscape restoration and strengthening intercountry cooperation.

-      Facilitation policies and strategies harmonization in the field of landscape restoration and sustainable nature management of the Central Asian countries. CAREC will provide a platform for discussions, exchange of experience, and harmonization of the legal framework that promotes effective and coordinated management of transboundary territories.

-      Ensuring sustainability of knowledge and approaches — through publications, thematic briefs, reports, and other analytical materials distributed among partners, government agencies, and the scientific community.

As noted by the Director of the CAREC Country Office in Uzbekistan, Nodirbek Rakhimjonov, support will also be provided for Uzbekistan's participation in regional forums and initiatives, including the annual Central Asia Conference on Climate Change (CACCC), where the progress of the RESILAND Uzbekistan project and the results achieved under the contract will be presented.

The Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia expresses gratitude to the Forestry Agency of Uzbekistan under the Ministry of Ecology, environmental protection and climate change of the Republic of Uzbekistan for their trust and fruitful cooperation in preparing the agreement. Special thanks to the Director of the CAREC Country Office in Uzbekistan, Nodirbek Rakhimjonov, for the initiative, strategic support, and systematic work on coordinating all stakeholders, which allowed bringing the process to a successful signing.
