Dubai – UAE – UNFCCC COP28 CA Pavilion – December 10 – issues of adaptation within the water and mitigation of the adverse effects of climate change were discussed at the side event “Water and Climate: Building Resilience in Central Asia's Water Sector”.
Central Asia faces acute vulnerability to climate change, characterized by rising temperatures, reduced precipitation, and increased extreme weather events. These factors exert immense pressure on aquatic ecosystems, jeopardizing water supplies, agriculture, and industry.
The side event considered the wide range of issues concerning water resources within the region, namely:
- a shared vision and understanding of water resilience for climate action, development, and security;
- awareness of technical tools and resources designed to enable water-sensitive mitigation and adaptation action;
- strategies for implementing integrated climate risk assessments, including analyzing climate trends, temperature fluctuations, and precipitation patterns in Central Asia;
- measures to safeguard water-related ecosystems and biodiversity;
- strategies to secure and mobilize financial resources for water sector adaptation;
- collaboration with international organizations and partners to leverage technical support and expertise.
The side event is organized by the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA) together with IGTIC and CAREC.
