On May 21st 2026, CAREC held the third online training session under the "Capacity Building for Methane Emission Reduction in Central Asia" (CA CBMER) project, titled "Non-Satellite Methane
Detection and Quantification Technologies." The session brought together government representatives, experts, and stakeholders from Uzbekistan and international partners to deepen their understanding of practical, ground-based tools for monitoring methane emissions.
The session covered a wide range of detection and measurement methods, including optical gas imaging, vehicle-based measurements, drone surveys, aircraft-based LiDAR, and stationary monitoring systems. Participants also received practical guidance on evaluating technology performance and selecting appropriate methods for different field conditions.
.
This training was the third in a series that began in March 2026 with an introduction to satellite-based methane observation tools, including MethaneSAT, and continued in April with a case study on MethaneSAT applications. This third training session expanded the regional toolkit by focusing on non-satellite technologies that complement satellite data in building comprehensive emissions monitoring systems.
The training was led by Dr. David Lyon, Senior Methane Scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). Dr. Lyon earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Dynamics from the University of Arkansas and has researched methane emissions from the oil and gas industry for nearly 15 years. He has managed multiple research studies using a range of technologies to quantify methane emissions and also worked at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on the implementation of the Methane Emissions Reduction Program. Currently at EDF, his work focuses on defending science-based methane regulations and emissions reporting.
The CA CBMER project aims to strengthen the capacity of Central Asian stakeholders to monitor, report, and reduce methane emissions, supporting the development of effective national policies and practical emission reduction measures across the region.
