RESILAND Kyrgyzstan: Restoring Landscapes and Building Climate Resilience

Publication date: 29 August 2025

Central Asia faces some of the world’s fastest rates of land degradation and climate vulnerability. Rising temperatures, droughts, floods, and other natural hazards are already putting communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems under severe pressure.

The Kyrgyz Republic is among the region’s most climate-vulnerable countries. Its mountainous terrain makes it prone to flash floods, landslides, and mudflows, while melting glaciers and rising temperatures are intensifying water scarcity and disaster risks.

The Resilient Landscape Restoration Project (RESILAND Kyrgyzstan) is aimed to address these challenges. It is implemented under financial support of the World Bank, PROGREEN, and KWPF within the regional Central Asia Resilient Landscape Restoration Program (RESILAND CA+).

The project has two main objectives:

  • Expand the area under sustainable landscape management in priority regions of Kyrgyzstan;
  • Strengthen collaboration with Central Asian neighbors on transboundary restoration.

What RESILAND Kyrgyzstan Will Do

  • Develop national strategies for landscape restoration and biodiversity conservation;
  • Improve monitoring of land degradation, glaciers, and natural hazards;
  • Invest in climate-resilient infrastructure to reduce flood and landslide risks;
  • Restore degraded pastures, forests, and agricultural lands;
  • Support sustainable livelihoods such as ecotourism, non-timber forest products, and climate-smart agriculture;
  • Promote knowledge exchange and regional cooperation.

The project will focus on Jalal-Abad, Osh, Batken, Issyk-Kul, Chui, and Naryn oblasts, with special attention to ecosystems shared across borders, such as the Fergana Valley.

Regional Cooperation

A key focus of the RESILAND CA+ program is sharing knowledge and coordinating policies at the regional level. The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) will help strengthen cooperation among Central Asian countries on transboundary landscape restoration. CAREC will also provide a regional platform for information exchange, bringing together countries of the region for high-level dialogue to support the alignment of policies and approaches to restoring cross-border landscapes and managing protected areas.
