RESILAND Kyrgyzstan: OVOP in the Regions Drives Business Growth

Publication date: 16 April 2026

In the Jalal-Abad region of the Kyrgyz Republic, mobilization of local producers continues under the “One Village, One Product” (OVOP) initiative, with a focus on identifying and developing products with market potential.

Field visits covered the Nooken, Bazar-Korgon, Aravan, and Alay districts.

During these visits, OVOP specialists engaged directly with artisans and entrepreneurs—ranging from producers of felt goods and macramé to makers of sumolok, clarified butter (sary mai), herbal teas, semi-processed foods, baked goods, and confectionery products.

Promising areas are also being explored, including the processing of agricultural products such as rice and apple cider vinegar.

Particular attention is given to product quality and competitiveness. Discussions focus on improving taste characteristics, expanding product lines, introducing processing techniques, as well as enhancing packaging and market positioning.

In parallel, hands-on support is provided to help producers formalize their businesses, including guidance on sole proprietorship registration, taxation, and basic requirements for market entry.

This mobilization effort not only helps identify local products with strong potential, but also establishes a system of support for producers—from idea development to market-ready products capable of securing a competitive position.

The Kyrgyz Republic Resilient Landscape Restoration Project (RESILAND Kyrgyzstan) is part of the World Bank’s RESILAND CA+ program, aimed at strengthening landscape resilience across Central Asian countries. Similar national and regional activities are also being implemented in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) implements the regional component of the Kyrgyz Republic Resilient Landscape Restoration Project.
