RESILAND Kyrgyzstan: Preparatory Site Assessments Begin for Dam Construction and Rehabilitation

Publication date: 05 June 2026

Under the Kyrgyz Republic Resilient Landscape Restoration Project (RESILAND Kyrgyzstan) and the RESILAND CA+ Program, project specialists conducted field assessments in Osh and Jalal-Abad regions to evaluate sites where future interventions aimed at reducing mudflow and flood risks are planned.

The assessment team included district- and regional-level representatives of the Kyrgyz Republic’s Selvodzashchita Service under the Ministry of Emergency Situations, as well as a hydraulic engineer and environmental and social specialists. During the field mission, the team inspected rock quarries in Aravan and Alay districts of Osh Region. Specialists assessed the quarries’ compliance with the World Bank’s environmental and social requirements and carried out a technical evaluation of available construction materials, including the volume, location, and characteristics of the stone required for protective infrastructure works.

The team also surveyed sites identified for the construction and rehabilitation of protective dams along the Kara-Unkur-Sai River in Bazar-Korgon and Nooken districts of Jalal-Abad Region. The assessments were conducted within the territories of the Seidikum, Aral, and Sakaldy ayil aimaks.

Such field assessments are an important part of the preparation of engineering solutions under RESILAND Kyrgyzstan. They enable specialists to determine key technical parameters for future works, identify potential environmental and social risks, and select construction materials that meet safety and sustainability standards.

RESILAND Kyrgyzstan is implemented by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic with support from the World Bank. The project aims to reduce climate-related risks, restore degraded landscapes, and strengthen the resilience of communities and regions to natural hazards and emergencies.
