Preparing for a discussion on the importance of biennial transparency reports: Progress on reporting in Central Asia

Publication date: 02 May 2024

In the field of climate change, transparency and cooperation have come to the forefront in recent years. Among the many tools that contribute to capacity building in the area of transparency, the Biannual Transparency Report (BTR) plays a special role. This type of reporting, mandated under the Paris Agreement, is a detailed report that captures countries' efforts on ongoing climate change mitigation efforts, and contributes to building trust and accountability at the global level.

Central Asian countries are signatories to the Paris Agreement and will also have to submit their transparency reports by the end of this year. The Regional Climate Hub (ReCATH) of Central Asia together with international development partners of the World Food Organization (FAO), as well as the Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency - Global Support Program (CBIT-GSP) is holding a side event at the Central Asia Climate Change Conference (CACCC-2024) in Almaty on the progress of reporting in Central Asian countries and the challenges faced by the countries in the process of working on the BTR.

CACCC-2024 is organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) under Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program in the Aral Sea Basin AF (CAMP4ASB AF), the Central Asia Water and Energy Program (CAWEP) and “Climate Risk Management in Central Asia” program by GIZ.

The side event will discuss the progress of report preparation by representatives of Central Asian countries, as well as issues and difficulties faced by the countries in the first place.

The sections of the BTR include: National Greenhouse Gas Inventory (NIR), progress on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Efforts, a section on the amount of climate finance received/provided, a discussion on support received and assistance needed for developing countries to ensure equitable progress.

The BTR is a beacon guiding collective efforts to achieve a sustainable future. This event will increase transparency in reporting by countries in the region and will also serve as an excellent platform for sharing experiences.

The event will be held on May 27, 2024.
