World Lake Day: Preserving the Aquatic Ecosystems of Central Asia

Publication date: 27 August 2025

Each year, the global environmental community marks World Lake Day on 27 August, established by the United Nations General Assembly. This day is intended to highlight the vital role of lakes and freshwater ecosystems in the life of our planet, which are now under serious threat due to overexploitation, pollution, and climate change.

In Central Asia, where unique lakes are located, the issue of their preservation has become especially urgent against the backdrop of the drying of the Aral Sea and the reduction of water reserves in both mountain and lowland lakes.

Since its establishment, the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) has been contributing to the preservation and sustainable management of water resources with the support of donors and partners. CAREC has facilitated the development of transboundary cooperation on water resources management, supported international initiatives aimed at saving the Aral Sea, and worked to strengthen regional policies in the field of sustainable water use.
