The Tuyamuyun Hydroelectric Complex (THC) is a transboundary water-energy facility located along the Amudarya River at the border between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The facility is located in Turkmenistan, but belongs to Uzbekistan. The land is leased by Turkmenistan based on the corresponding legal agreements.
The growing sedimentation of the THC’s channel Ruslovoye Reservoir – that has already reached 70% – disables water passage to the other three reservoirs of the Tuyamuyun Hydroelectric Complex for irrigation and drinking needs. By 2040, the Ruslovoye Reservoir is forecasted to get fully silted as per the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario harnessing the WEF security for 5+ mln people in Uz-bekistan and Turkmenistan.
Transboundary Nexus demo project between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan “Tuyamuyun Hydroelectric Complex” aims to support the WEF security by tackling the growing sedimentation at the THC’s Ruslovoye Reservoir. At this time within the framework of the project the following results have been achieved:
· Final reports finalized;
· The draft of final report by international consultant “Deltares” produced;
· The chemical composition of the sediments from Ruslovoye Reservoir concluded;
· The lab experiments on producing the burnt bricks out of sediments of Ruslovoye Reservoir successfully conducted by a Kazakhstan laboratory;
· The data collection and work on CBA by consultant “Altus Impact” initiated.
