On September 19, World Cleanup Day was held in Uzbekistan, initiated by the State Committee of Ecology and Environmental Protection of Uzbekistan. The ecological campaign was supported by CAREC Branch in Uzbekistan, Ecological Party, NGO Ecomaktab, International Charity Fund Meros, supermarket and hypermarket international chain Carrefour.
The idea of World Cleanup Day first appeared in Estonia in 2008, when 50,000 volunteers came together to clean up the country. Today, this event has become a major social volunteer movement, uniting more than 180 countries.
The events dedicated to World Cleanup Day were organized in more than 170 regions of Uzbekistan. This initiative brought together government organizations, water and environmental NGOs, business representatives, as well as professionals in culture and art with a common goal of protecting the environment.
This year, the environmental campaign focused on the theme of tobacco waste collection. According to statistics, 4.5 trillion tobacco waste is released worldwide into the environment annually, which contains more than 150 toxic substances harmful to humans and nature.
The team of the CAREC Branch in Uzbekistan supported this initiative and participated in the event in Tashkent park on the embankment, as well as provided visibility products of the UzWaterAware project for the most active participants of the event.
The UzWaterAware project is implemented by CAREC with the financial support of the European Union during the period 2016-2019. The overall objective of the project is to sensitise and generate a greater degree of awareness on the strategic importance of water saving, water conservation and environmental protection under the conditions of climate change.
