Project information

Country office of CAREC in Kyrgyzstan, under a small-scale funding agreement, is supporting the UNEP Central Asia Office in developing a Common Country Analysis (CCA) and the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (SDCF) for the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. As part of this agreement, CAREC also assists the UNEP Central Asia Office in using UNEP's innovative and dynamic environmental data platform, the World Environment Situation Room (WESK), to provide countries with access to optimal data and analysis at the global and national levels.

In addition, the CO CAREC conducted a desk study on Nature based solutions and their potential for building resilience to COVID-19 and urban air pollution and for supporting healthy urban living in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The approach was based on a desk study and review of existing and potential nature-based solutions in Bishkek and Dushanbe (in terms of their potential to improve urban air quality), a review of existing research and data on COVID-19 and air pollution in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Project objectives:

  • The main objective of this agreement is to support UNEP Central Asia Office in assisting the UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UNRCOs) and UNCTs in the Kyrgyz Republic and in the Republic of Tajikistan in the development and review of the environmental dimension of the respective CCAs and UNSDCFs.

Components:

(1) leading and coordinating the work of engaged UN agencies in the development of the environmental context section of the Kyrgyz Republic’s CCA under the respective UNSDCF 2023-27 process timeline;

(2) contributing to the preparation of the new UNSDCF for the Republic of Tajikistan for the period 2023-2027 through review of and support to the development of its environmental dimension;

(3) identifying relevant sources of high-quality data, assessing and validating their consistency and relevance to the CCA and UNSDCF processes in both countries, and supporting UNEP in their integration and publication on the WESR-CCA platform;

(4) providing feedback to UNEP and the Regional IBC on the use of the Regional IBC’s “Guidance on Mainstreaming Environment and Climate Change in UNSDCF Processes”.

(5) Conducting a desk study on Nature based solutions and their potential for building resilience to COVID-19 and urban air pollution and for supporting healthy urban living in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
