CAREC at the Samarkand International Climate Forum 2025: Participation in the Regional Dialogue on Climate and Sustainable Development

Publication date: 07 April 2025

Samarkand, Uzbekistan | April 4–5, 2025

Representatives of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) took part in the Samarkand International Climate Forum, organized by the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan in cooperation with a number of international organizations and partners. The forum served as a key international platform aimed at fostering climate dialogue, sharing experience, and promoting sustainable development initiatives in Central Asia.

More than 600 participants from over 30 countries took part in the event — including high-level government officials, international experts, scientists, representatives of NGOs, and the private sector. The central focus of the discussions was on the challenges and opportunities related to climate change, as well as pathways toward a green economy.

CAREC as an Active Participant in Key Sessions and Discussions

While CAREC did not deliver a formal presentation, its representatives were actively engaged in the forum’s panel and thematic sessions, including:

  “Green Economy as a Pathway to Sustainable Development” – discussing economic instruments and investment opportunities for ecological transformation;

- “Clean Energy” – focusing on the energy transition and the deployment of renewable energy sources;

- “Integrated Water Resources Management” – addressing regional cooperation under increasing water scarcity and climate risks;

- Side meetings and consultations – exchanging views with partners, representatives of international organizations, ministries, and academia.

CAREC used the opportunity to strengthen professional networks, establish new partnerships, and learn more about the latest regional initiatives on climate change adaptation, sustainable natural resource management, and green finance.

Results and Impact of CAREC's Participation

Participation in the forum allowed to:

- enhance cooperation with national authorities and international organizations;

- discuss the prospects for expanding collaboration on key areas of sustainable development;

- support the broader agenda of climate adaptation, resilience, and cross-sectoral coordination in Central Asia.

Special attention during the discussions was devoted to the importance of developing a long-term climate agenda, improving mechanisms for financing environmental initiatives, and involving a broad range of stakeholders — from youth to vulnerable communities — in climate action efforts.

CAREC extends its gratitude to the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan for organizing the Samarkand Climate Forum and for the opportunity to participate and engage in constructive dialogue. CAREC will continue to actively contribute to promoting regional cooperation, evidence-based decision-making, and sustainable initiatives in the field of environment and climate.
